LGBTQ+ Support

We aim to provide a sense of the LGBTQ-inclusive atmosphere we have on our campus, suggest resources for those who want to learn more to better our campus, and also to offer support and guidance for LGBTQ students, staff, faculty, and their friends and family. Productive inquiry best takes place when individuals can explore and share their experience and thoughts as equal members of our community, uninhibited by prejudice or discrimination.

The University of Rochester includes gender identity and expression as a protected group in its non-discrimination policy in affirmation of the University’s philosophy that all students should be treated fairly and respectfully. As we strive to be a more diverse and inclusive campus, we recognize the importance of having policies and practices that support students who identify as transgender, gender variant, and/or gender nonconforming (GNC). This website provides information to support trans and GNC students as they navigate campus facilities, resources and systems.

The Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center (BIC) is a joint venture of the Office of the Dean of Students and the David T. Kearns Center. It exists to promote cultural awareness and engagement; educate on issues of identity, culture, and diversity; and provide avenues for intersection and opportunities for collaboration.

The BIC works closely with students, staff, faculty, and offices across campus to foster a collaborative environment throughout the year. Staff develops resources that complement and supplement curricular offerings, explore the intersections of identity, build intercultural competence, and promote and encourage cultural understanding and appreciation among the campus community, while also providing opportunities for education and dialogue on topics such as race, religion, LGBTQ issues, privilege, and bias-related incidents.

Students can use the intercultural lounge and LGBTQ resource area, which is an ideal location for studying, checking out books and videos, engaging in discussions, and as a community gathering space.

Visit the LGBTQ+ Health webpage from the UHS Health Promotion Office to download a copy of their Queer Health Resource Guide. This guide covers topics such as where to find physical and mental health care providers, coming our, spiritual care, name changes, all-gender restrooms, and more.

Trillium Health, a Community Health Center, provides extraordinary care for all, including LGBTQ+ health, ensuring equitable, judgement-free and affordable care. Trillium Health offers STI and HIV testing and prevention services. For LGBTQ+ folks, they offer a variety of support groups as well.

Founded in 1996 as the Men of Color Health Awareness Project, The MOCHA Center has worked to educate Black and Latino men about living a sex-positive life. Over the years, our mission and the people we work with have grown. Now in partnership with Trillium Health, we’ve turned into a community health center that offers both community and health in equal amounts—providing a safe place to network, socialize, and address any health issues you face.

The MOCHA Center offers services such as HIV/STI testing, HIV prevention, support services, and more.
